There are very few of them left in British Columbia, but residents are still managing to catch sight of the elusive badger in the Okanagan valley.

Dil Brar reports seeing one of the nocturnal animals last month near Greata Ranch, a winery and vineyard in Peachland.

Brar said in an email he and a few friends saw the elusive badger, who normally aren’t that fond of humans, while on a camping trip in the area.

“He was actually quite friendly toward us and he let us get close to get some cool photos,” Brar says.

Osoyoos Desert Centre manager Leor Oren says a badger was recently sighted at the desert sanctuary in Osoyoos.

Oren says there are only 300 badgers left in the province and only 30 estimated in the Okanagan valley.

Reasons for their decline include the animal’s high rate of road mortality due to their nocturnal nature, and disappearing habitat due to development.

Dil Brar said this badger appeared 'quite friendly,' something not common amongst the species.
