Rain dampens fire danger in Kamloops fire zone

Lightning in the Kamloops Fire District has come with plenty of rain this week, resulting in few new fires.

KAMLOOPS - Recent rains are lessening concerns in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

Fire information officer Hannah Swift says significant rain over the past couple of days has had a downward effect on the fire danger rating as we head into the long weekend, with more rain expected.

“Provincially, about 11 new fires started in the northwest after the lightning passed through, but in Kamloops fire centre there’s not really too much going on,” she said.

Lightning has passed through the region, but it came with lots of moisture, Swift said.  A fire near Boston Bar that started by lightning last night is now out, with only two fires burning in the district, both of which are old fires.

The Okanagan region’s fire danger rating is currently low to very low, with pockets of moderate fire danger around Kelowna and Vernon, Swift said.

Environment Canada is forecasting showers through Saturday before a couple of dry days, with more rain in the forecast starting Monday night in Kamloops, and Tuesday in the Okanagan.
