TORONTO - Wando, the last thoroughbred to win the Canadian Triple Crown, was named for induction into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame on Tuesday.
Wando captured the 2003 Triple Crown and retired with 11 wins in 23 career starts and $2.5 million in earnings. Wando, owned by Hall of Famer Gustav Schickedanz of Schomberg, Ont., died in January at the age of 14.
Robert Landry, twice Canada's top jockey who has amassed over 2,000 wins and $69 million in earnings over a 29-year career, headlined the list of seven individuals named for induction. Others include Argentine-born trainer Horatio Luro (three-time Queen's Plate winner); standardbred trainer/driver Wally Hennessey of Charlottetown (over 8,500 career wins); and breeders W. (Bill) D. Graham of Windhaven Farms and Arthur W. Stollery of Angus Glen Farms.
Wando headlined the list of 14 horses selected. Also named were filly Apelia (Canada's '93 champion sprinter) and standardbreds Rocknroll Hanover (over $3 million in earnings, sired winners of $60.7 million) and Dreamfair Eternal ('10 Canadian horse of the year, 56 wins, over $2.5 million in earnings).
The induction ceremony will be held Aug. 6 at the Mississauga Convention Centre.
