MONTREAL - A former Montreal police chief and anti-corruption whistleblower has confirmed he will run in the Quebec election.

Jacques Duchesneau says he will run for the new Coalition for Quebec's Future, in a move that could be a major game-changer in the campaign.

The announcement gives the third-place party an immediate boost in credibility as it tries to make the fight against corruption a key issue for voters.

Duchesneau was hired by the Liberals in 2010 to investigate allegations of corruption and collusion in the construction industry.

His report, which he leaked to the media, included charges of illegal schemes in the construction industry and political financing.

Premier Jean Charest says his government has taken steps to tackle corruption, including calling an inquiry into the construction industry.
