Putting a different spin on health and wellness

Dr. Corrina Iampen, owner of SenSei Laser and Vein Rejuvenation, administers PRP to a client in her West Kelowna clinic.

Finding a solution to regaining a pain-free quality of life, while feeling and looking fabulous, isn’t as out of reach as you may think, thanks to an advanced spin on health and beauty care.

It’s not so much a new procedure, but rather one that has become more accessible. Platelet Rich Plasma, PRP, can be used in several ways; to correct tissue, arthritic or sport joint damage and for hair regrowth.

“How it works is we take a patient’s blood and spin it at a high rate in a centrifuge to get the platelets. The higher concentration of platelets is then injected directly into the tissue to speed up the healing process,” explains Dr. Corrina Iampen, owner of SenSei Laser and Vein Rejuvenation Centre in West Kelowna.

Blood contains red and white blood cells and platelets. The platelets in blood are what clot the blood. These platelets also contain proteins called growth factors which assist in the healing of injuries. It’s the clotting factor that gives platelets their healing power.

“This is a procedure that has evolved to help with ageing gracefully, and to generate non-surgical treatments for joint injuries. It’s also used to restore hair growth by reversing the process that occurs in hair loss,” says Dr. Iampen.

The doctor goes on to say that there are times patients get tired of taking medications for joint or tendon inflammation, or they find their medications are no longer helping with the problem. PRP injections can get to the precise area that needs treatment.

“This is a great opportunity for some people before they resort to major surgery,” says Dr. Iampen.

PRP procedures for hair loss take about an hour and several sessions may be necessary. This is similar for treatment of tendinitis or other inflammations. After receiving a PRP treatment, a person can usually return to their regular activities without any limitations, assures Dr. Iampen.

There may be some mild pain at the injection site, tenderness, a bit of swelling or even some itching, but these sensations are all temporary.

“The satisfaction rate of PRP is very high. We have found patients are quite pleased and have been able to get back to a better quality of life,” says Dr. Iampen.

To find out more about PRP or to determine if this is a suitable option for you, Dr. Iampen would be happy to provide a consultation.
