A 27-year-old Kelowna man who preyed on women aged 67 to 83 has been arrested.

There were three separate incidents of purses being snatched between Thursday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 2, and involved women with groceries.

“This individual waited to prey on some of our community’s senior members while they were alone going about their daily lives,” Kelowna RCMP media relations officer Const. Mike Della-Paolera said in a media release.

The first theft happened on Thursday in the 1900 block of Kane Road when a man grabbed a 76-year-old woman’s purse out of her shopping cart as she unloaded groceries into her vehicle. The purse snatching was captured by video surveillance.

On Saturday, an 83-year-old woman was walking home from a grocery store along Drysdale Boulevard when a thief grabbed her purse from on top of her shopping bag and ran off.

Next up, on Sunday, a 67-year-old woman in the 2200 block of Baron Road was unloading her groceries when a man walked up and stole her purse. She did give chase but he managed to get away.

All three victims described the man as a Caucasian male in his 20s with a thin build, of medium height, wearing a reddish sweater and fled in a grey pickup truck. Given that description, police were able to identify and arrest the 27-year-old suspect who has been charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property.
