A 13-week-old puppy that was stolen from a Kelowna home earlier this week has been found safe and sound.

Kelowna RCMP media relations liaison Mike Della-Paolera said Sundae the pitbull and Rottweiler mix was found last night, June 10, in a Rutland apartment and has been returned to its owner.

Puppy owner January Bergen, who lives on Clement Avenue, was outside tending to some rhubarb when a man entered the backdoor in her yard, went into the kitchen and spoke with a friend who was washing dishes in the kitchen, June 8.

“A friend in the kitchen said ‘someone stole your dog and was running away with her,’” Bergen said. “He said ‘I heard there was a puppy to pet here' and grabbed her in his arms and ran.”

She said he attempted to steal all three of her dogs by leashing them together using one leash, but was unsuccessful in wrangling them when they escaped and ended up fleeing with her 13-month-old puppy named Sundae.

"She's happy to have her dog back and she doesn't want to support any charges," Della-Paolera said.

Police officers were able to locate the dog using information gathered from the homeless population and the dog was unharmed.
