The City of Vernon has approved its budget for 2024 and property taxes are going up more than 5%.
The city’s budget increase of 5.49% will support the developing landscape of the city, according to a City of Vernon media release issued today, Dec. 6.
Homeowners can expect to pay, on average, an extra $102 annually or $8.50 monthly.
“The 2024 budget emphasizes council’s dedication to community well-being, centring on maintaining core municipal services to support the evolving needs of a growing populace while staying aligned with council’s 2023-2026 strategic plan,” Mayor Victor Cumming said in the release.
The city’s financial plan is broken down into multiple sections. With 23 capital projects planned for 2024, the budget will be $29 million.
Capital projects include things like infrastructure and sewer system improvements. The 2024 Capital Program is in line with the city’s Rolling 5-Year Infrastructure Plan.
“As a council, we recognize the cost of living is increasing and inflationary pressures are creating financial difficulties for many people. As a municipality, we feel these pressures as well,” Mayor Cumming said.”
