Propane leak shuts down Kelowna roads and businesses

A propane leak at a Kelowna gas station caused road closures and forced businesses to evacuate this afternoon.

At approximately 1:50 p.m. the Kelowna Fire Department received a call reporting a gas leak at the corner of Highway 33 and Dougall Road, according to platoon captain Tim Light, in a news release.

Firefighters reported a propane leak at a fuel station. Superior Propane was on scene but needed to get other resources to empty the propane tank at the fuel station, Light said in the release.

Roads were temporarily closed and businesses were evacuated.

"Fire crews are still on scene standing by while Superior Propane pumps out the affected propane tank," Light said.

The roads have since been reopened. The Kelowna Fire Department responded to the incident with two engines, a safety vehicle and a command vehicle along with 10 personnel.
