Process to close North Okanagan and Shuswap schools officially begins

NORTH OKANAGAN - School closures in the North Okanagan and Salmon Arm could be happening as soon as the coming school year.

The School District 83 board of education voted yesterday, Feb. 9, to start a 60-day consultation process to close Armstrong Elementary School and Silver Creek Elementary for September 2016.

In Armstrong, trustees are looking at turning Pleasant Valley Secondary into a Grade 8 to 12 school, and making Len Wood Middle School an elementary school. Highland Park would remain an elementary school.

With the closure of Silver Creek, the board would amalgamate the school with Salmon Arm West Elementary.

The board also voted to consider reconfiguring Ranchero Elementary to a Grade K to 8 school and to complete a catchment area review of M.V. Beattie Elementary, Grindrod Elementary, and Ranchero Elementary. It’s also looking at the financial and educational feasibility of having one Grade 9 to 12 Salmon Arm high school, located at the Sullivan Campus.

An estimated 125 people packed the board room for Tuesday's evening meeting.
