Pro-Palestine activists still protesting at UBCO

The pro-Palestine encampment at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, Thursday 27, 2024.

Protestors are still at the pro-Palestine encampment at University of British Columbia Okanagan campus in Kelowna six weeks after they first pitched their tents.

The pro-Palestine encampment is calling for UBCO to divest from companies protesters said have contributed to the deaths of civilians in Gaza.

The movement is holding a rally this Saturday, June 29, at 4 p.m.

Protestors have taken measures to remain anonymous and have not given their names to journalists nor will they let themselves be photographed. They say they are worried about retaliation but didn't elaborate.

UBCO declined to comment at this time but the school released a statement when the camp was set up in May.

"The university is monitoring the situation and is continuing to liaise with law enforcement to ensure the safety of those both inside and outside the protest area," the statement read. "To the extent that inappropriate conduct violates one or more of the university’s policies, individuals may be subject to the university’s disciplinary processes or other appropriate measures under the university’s discrimination policy or student code of conduct."
