Pride flag taken from church in Summerland

The Summerland United Church was hanging a Pride flag near its front doors but now it’s gone.

Members of the church arrived on the morning of July 2 to discover the symbol of inclusivity was no longer on display. A single grommet on a hook was all that remained.

“We are saddened that someone(s) in our community is acting from a place of hate or fear, rather than love,” according to a Facebook post from the church.

“We at Summerland United Church will continue to publicly, intentionally and explicitly provide a welcoming and safe space for BIPOC and the 2sLGBTQIA+ community."

The post explains that the flag was originally hanging from the bell tower, as pictured, but it was getting twisted so it moved to the overhang in front of the church doors, where it was taken from.

“Regardless of the loss of our flag know that you are welcome, you are loved and beloved.”
