Customers receiving bills from Fortis B.C. are going to see some increases in their bills in the new year.

Fortis B.C. prices will increase by 3.47% starting Jan. 1, according to a press release issued by the energy company.

As a result, a residential customer with an average use of approximately 1,100 kilowatt-hours per month of electricity would see their monthly bills increase by about $5.36.

As a regulated, privately-owned utility company, Fortis B.C. applies to the British Columbia Utilities Commission each year to set rates for the following year.

Fortis B.C. says the increased rates reflect the company’s plans for 2022 with investments in pole structures, power lines, equipment and multi-year upgrade projects for its hydroelectric generating and transmission facilities.

Next year is also the final year of the gradual phase-out of the two-tier residential electricity rates which will be transitioned to a single rate as of 2023.

For more information about current rates, and how rates are set, visit Fortis B.C.’s website here.
