SUMMERLAND - Residents of the Summerland’s Garnet Valley area can expect to see smoke in the coming weeks as a prescribed burn is planned for the area.

Dawn Russell with the Penticton Indian Band says in a media release the band, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development along with Davies Wildfire are planning a prescribed burn in the Garnet Lake area within the next one to three weeks, weather permitting.

The burn is expected to cover around 120 hectares and will be located northwest of Summerland, southwest of Peachland.

The fires will be closely monitored, although smoke may be visible from these fires in several nearby communities, Russell says. Such burns are necessary to help restore and enhance wildlife habitat and reduce the risk of wildfire in the area.

Prescribed burns are part of an ongoing ecosystem restoration project administered by the Penticton Indian Band Natural Resource Department.
