Winter can be a beautiful season when skiing with your family at one of our local resorts, or sitting inside watching snowflakes drift down during the holidays. But, we all like warm, cozy homes during the stormy season, so it is important to prepare your furnace for cold snaps.

Do-It-Yourself Tips

1. Replace the air filter in your furnace.

2. Consider upgrading to a pleated or HEPA if your current filter is flat.

3. Remove the vent covers and vacuum the dust from the air vents and ducts.

4. Turn off the power from the main circuit breaker to the furnace. Remove the air handler cover. Inspect the blower belt for cracks and replace the belt if it is damaged.

5. Find the exhaust flue outside and make sure it is free of debris to ensure proper ventilation.

6. Depending on the type of furnace you own, you may need to switch to heat mode and light the pilot light. Refer to your manual on how to light and troubleshoot the pilot light and thermocouple.

… or call a professional heating contractor.

Remember that extreme weather can cause power outages. While outages are rare, it is best to have an emergency kit ready and your exit plan prepared before the season arrives. Some items to include in your kit are flashlights, batteries, warm blankets and clothes, drinking water, and snacks.

Stay safe, and keep warm! Enjoy the season.
