Power restored after broken power pole causes massive Kamloops outage

BC Hydro crews are repairing equipment on a Kamloops power pole after a fire on March 21, 2024.

A broken power pole caused an outage that affected thousands of people in Kamloops Thursday morning.

Kamloops Fire Rescue was called to the scene around 4:40 a.m., where they doused the burning BC Hydro pole along Mission Flats Road.

Platoon captain Kris Krutop said BC Hydro cut power as a preventative measure in order to keep crews at the scene safe, which meant nearly 3,500 customers were without power until around 8:15 a.m.

BC Hydro personnel at the scene said a piece of equipment atop the pole broke, which then caused the fire. Fire crews prevented it from spreading to the ground and nearby grass between Summit Drive and Mission Flats Road.

With power restored both downtown and across the North Shore, BC Hydro crews are repairing the power lines.
