Possible explosive device in Vernon back alley: RCMP

RCMP remain on the scene this morning after a suspicious object was found in a back alley in Vernon last night.

The alley remains closed to the public as an explosive disposal unit makes its way to the city.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP were called at around 9 p.m. yesterday, Oct. 3, after a person found a "cylindrical device" on the 3400 block of 32 Street, according to an RCMP press release.

Officers who first showed up could not determine what the object was to the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit was called.

"The area will remain cordoned off until officers with the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit have safely examined and dealt with the item if necessary," Const. Chris Terleski, RCMP spokesperson, said in the release.

"We are urging members of the public to avoid the area as we await the arrival of our EDU Team at the scene later this morning."
