Crews have closed a section of East Shuswap Road in the Lafarge area east of Kamloops due to riverbank erosion.

The bank along the South Thompson River which runs parallel to East Shuswap Road has fallen away, and the eastbound lane has now been closed.

Danielle Pope, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation, says they have been monitoring the erosion at the location since the spring. The stretch of road affected by the erosion runs from Lafarge Road to the Valleyview area, and crews continue to monitor the situation as the flooding continues.

“The site has been assessed by the ministry's geotechnical engineers, who recommended the eastbound lane be closed to ensure safety,” Pope says in an emailed statement to iNFOnews.ca. “Staff are working with engineers and our maintenance contractor to develop a plan for the repair.”

Pope states Argo Road Maintenance has closed the lane and is managing traffic through the westbound lane in a single-lane alternating fashion. There is not yet an estimate when the lane might reopen.

“Staff are working with engineers and our maintenance contractor to develop a plan for the repair,” Pope says.
