The 62nd annual Vernon Winter Carnival will see the return of its popular parade this year.

The Vernon Winter Carnival parade is scheduled to go ahead Feb. 6 at noon, starting at Bean to Cup on 27 Street, winter carnival society treasurer and director Brian Langner said.

There are still two weeks to go before the event, so realistically it could still be cancelled, he said.

Last year, the parade was cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and the carnival was scaled back.

Organizers were waiting to see if provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry would reveal more restrictions last week, he said.

Some events have been cancelled this year due to pandemic restrictions after the festival was planning for a full-scale return from Feb. 4 to 14, according to the carnival's website.

The 62nd Annual Vernon Winter Carnival started as a way to bring tourists to Vernon and foster community spirit, but over the decades has become a yearly festival that has something for everyone to look forward to.

The 10-day festival in February usually has 100 events running throughout the city.

Langner is also looking for parade participants. Those interested can contact him at 250-306-0198 or contact the society’s office.

The Downtown Vernon Association sponsored 13th annual Chili Cook-Off and Gold Rush Scavenger Hunt are returning this year.

A full list of events can be found on the winter carnival’s website here.
