Police watchdog investigating after person dies during incident with Enderby RCMP

B.C.'s police watchdog is investigating after an individual died on Monday during an incident involving the Enderby RCMP.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has an open investigation in progress into the circumstances that surround the individual's death, July 13.

An Independent Investigations Office spokesperson said they are currently attempting to determine if police action played any role in this matter before they determine whether they will continue the investigation.

Information about the individual or the circumstances that led to their death has not been released.

Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP refused to comment on the matter stating enquiries should be directed to the Independent Investigations Office.

The Independent Investigations Office is a civilian-led police watchdog, responsible for conducting investigations into incidents of death or serious harm that may have been the result of the police.

— This story was corrected at 11:15 a.m. Monday, July 20, 2020. An earlier version of this story said the individual was being held at the Enderby RCMP detachment. The Independent Investigations Office has since confirmed the death did not take place at the detachment.
