Police watchdog investigates Kamloops RCMP after robbery suspect injured

B.C.'s police watchdog is investigating after a robbery suspect was injured in downtown Kamloops.

A man riding a bicycle suspected to have been involved in a pair of robberies sustained a serious injury while being arrested in Riverside Park, according to an Independent Investigations Office of B.C. media release.

Kamloops RCMP were called to Lansdowne Mall around 7:25 p.m., Dec. 3, where a robbery was reported.

On the way to the scene, police received a report of a second robbery at another store in the same mall, according to a Kamloops RCMP news release.

Officers saw the cyclist at the intersection of 3 Avenue and Lansdowne Street, but he fled into Riverside Park as they chased him, IIO said.

Once under arrest, the suspect was taken to hospital because of his injuries, police said.

Neither agency indicates whether the suspect is being charged in connection to the robberies.

Any person with relevant information or video footage of the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in B.C. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
