Police looking for witnesses to Kelowna hit and run

A rental van crashed into Canada's Best Value Inn on Highway 97 and damaged the overhang.

KELOWNA -  Police in Kelowna are asking for witnesses to come forward after a rental van crashed into a Rutland motel overhang on the weekend, causing significant damage.

Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey says in a news release today, Jan. 2, that police responded to reports of a property damaged by a hit and run at approximately 6:15 a.m. Dec. 31.

The crash caused significant damage to the overhang of the Canada's Best Value Inn, located in the 2600 block of Highway 97 North. Police arrived and interviewed witnesses who were alerted to the crash after hearing a loud bang from inside their rooms.

“Police believe that the suspect vehicle associated to this incident was a U-Haul cube van approximately 20 feet in length,” O’Donaghey says in the release. “The suspect vehicle was observed fleeing the scene, northbound on the highway, towards Vernon.”

RCMP are continuing to investigate, and believe the vehicle would have severe damage to the front upper portion of the cube van's box.

If you witnessed this incident and haven't spoken to police, you're asked to contact Const. Frank Gosselin at 250-762-3300.
