CLEARWATER - Police are investigating a tragic traffic collision that resulted in the death of a nine-year-old Clearwater boy.

RCMP say the young boy was riding his bicycle near the intersection of Park Drive and Clearwater Village Road at roughly 8:44 a.m. yesterday, May 29, when it appears he was unable to slow down his bicycle.

The boy went off the road and collided with a semi truck, according to an RCMP media release. The boy was thrown from his bike and sustained injuries.

Several witnesses including an off-duty RCMP officer immediately provided first aid to the boy. B.C. Ambulance arrived within minutes and took him to hospital. The boy succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

"This is a tragic incident for our community," Sgt. Grant Simpson of the Clearwater RCMP detachment says in the release. "Support is being provided to all those who have been impacted by this incident."

The principal of Raft River Elementary in Clearwater, north of Kamloops, Lori Bradstock says in a post on the school's website says nothing was shared with students in the hours after the Grade 3 student's death because RCMP were still trying to notify family members.

Bradstock says counsellors will support students who were given the news this morning, and the counselling team will also offer guidance to parents if they need help discussing the death with their children.

Clearwater RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating, but Simpson says charges are not being considered.
