A Kamloops man is in custody facing charges in connection with a purse snatching that escalated into an attempted car-jacking in Kamloops last week.

Officers were called to a report of a purse snatching in the 100 block of Victoria Street at around 3:40 p.m., Sept. 1, according to an RCMP media release.

The suspect had stolen a woman’s purse and fled on foot into Riverside Park with a civilian hot on his heels.

The civilian caught up with the suspect who was trying to steal a vehicle, RCMP said.

The suspect was arrested once police arrived.

“This suspect currently remains in custody pending a future court appearance and we are fortunate the public was not seriously injured,” Kamloops RCMP Insp. Jeff Pelley said in the release.

David Edward Nicholson, 31, of Kamloops has been charged with two counts of robbery and once count each of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes.

He has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance scheduled for Oct. 14.

Anyone who saw or witnessed anything related to this investigation, and has not yet spoke with police, are asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2021-30605.
