Kelowna RCMP went undercover to catch a serial shoplifter earlier this month.

Officer put on plainclothes to stake out a Kelowna retail store, Nov. 15, according to an RCMP media release issued today, Nov. 21.

The officers in street clothes teamed up with uniformed cops and store employees to nab the well known shoplifter.

RCMP do not identify the store.

The suspect stole about $1,000 worth of items and was met at the checkout by officers and arrested.

Michael Alan Godson, 46, remains in custody until his next court appearance, Nov. 23.

He’s charged with theft and breaching a release order. He was under conditions to not be in the store. He was also in possession of items he was prohibited from carrying. RCMP do not say what those items are.

“We are more than prepared to work with our local retail businesses to divert resources where necessary and taper these crimes,” Kelowna RCMP Sgt. Scott Powrie said in the release. “This is not the first time our officers have gone covert specifically targeting shoplifters and it certainly won’t be the last.”

Police have released Godson’s photo because he is associated with other thefts in the Kelowna area.

Anyone with more information on Godson is asked to contact Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
