Police explain their absence at Penticton anti-racism rally

Penticton RCMP avoided yesterday's peaceful protest against racism at Gyro Park out of respect for people's right to protest, police spokesperson Const. James Grandy says.

Penticton RCMP were conspicuously absent from yesterday’s rally against racism in Gyro Park in the city — for a reason.

Police spokesperson Const. James Grandy said today in a press release the Penticton detachment had received several inquiries with regard to non-attendance at the rally, which began around noon Sunday, June 7.

“We support people’s rights to peacefully protest. Out of respect for those who may find police presence emotionally upsetting, and not to detract from the message of the protest, Penticton officers chose not to attend,” Const. Grandy said.

The B.C. RCMP also said last week it was monitoring events in the U.S. following George Floyd’s death in Minnesota on May 25 and recognized racism and other forms of discrimination exist in Canada.

“The B.C. RCMP acknowledges there is work to be done to reduce, not just the impact but the very existence of discrimination. We continue to strengthen relationships with the people who live in our communities from all faiths, orientations, backgrounds and cultures to promote and foster an environment of inclusivity and diversity,” Deputy Commissioner Jennifer Strachan says in the release.
