VERNON - A newly engaged couple in Vernon is delighted to have come across a special photograph of the proposal taken by a complete stranger.

Cheree Steegstra says her fiancé Sheryn Wilson proposed on their one year anniversary, while they were going for a walk at Kin Beach in Vernon on New Year’s Eve. They documented the moment with a couple selfies but Steegstra says the pictures didn’t really turn out.

It wasn’t until later that day, when Steegstra was tagged on Facebook by a friend asking ‘is this you?’ that she realized a passerby had captured a beautiful photo of them.

“I was quite surprised to see it on Facebook, but pretty happy (because) we only had our cell phone to try and capture the moment,” Steegstra says.

The unexpected photographer was Jen Dase, who was at the park with her young daughter.

“We were playing in the snow, running around having fun and I pulled out my phone to grab a picture of my daughter. Right after I snapped her picture I turned around and saw the proposal. It was picture perfect so I snapped the photo,” she says.

She tried to reach the couple, but couldn’t catch up with them through the deep snow with her four-year-old.

“(I) decided to take it to Facebook and share it in hopes someone knows them,” she says. “Within a couple hours someone tagged Cheree. These ladies look so in love and I’m so very happy for them.”

The photo, which was posted on the Facebook page ‘Hell Yeah Vernon’, was taken with Dase’s cell phone and shows Wilson down on one knee with a softly lit Okanagan Lake in the background.
