Petition prods Peachland to plant peach trees

An online petition calling on Peachland to bring back peaches is building momentum as its creator prepares to present it to district council.

It was started on Change.org this past weekend with a modest goal of 100 signatures but as of today, Dec. 19, it has broken the 250 mark.

“Long has it been that the town of Peachland has gone without the fruit that attributed itself the namesake - peaches,” Connor Smith wrote on Change.org.

“The fair town has nothing of the sort to re-enforce it's peachy brand. Without any peach orchards or festivals or events, the town remains quite peach-less, something that is often quite confusing when it comes to the namesake of the town or tourism.”

Smith recommended a few peach trees – five to seven - be planted around the district to serve as a tourist attraction. He also suggested a plaque outlining the Peachland’s history be erected near one of the trees.

By soliciting donations of sapling from nurseries, the cost of the project can be kept to a minimum, Smith wrote.

He plans to present the petition to District of Peachland council.
