Petition launched urging Canada to cancel rent, mortgage payments

As Canadians are urged to self-isolate due to COVID-19 and stores and businesses close, the financial pressure is being felt on renters and homeowners.

An online petition on Change.org is urging the federal government to cancel rent and mortgage payments, similar to what has been done in Italy.

The petition was started two days ago by a user named Joseph Rutherford, and in the description he highlights the hardship that could be faced by some who are forced to stay home.

He said making this change will relieve financial pressure, limit the spread of COVID-19, and allow residents to stay home from work without housing insecurity.
