A Canada-wide petition against the Netflix cracking down on password sharing has garnered almost 60,000 signatures so far.

The Change.org petition was launched shortly after the streaming giant announced its long-anticipated plan to prevent its customers from sharing their passwords.

By Feb. 21 the petition had received 56,775. On Feb. 8 Netflix announced that it would begin its password crackdown and emailed customers regarding the changes.

Netflix premium and standard users will be given the option to add extra members for $7.99 per month, premium high-definition 4K subscribers can add two members who don't live in their household for that price.

The streaming giant began password-sharing rules in Latin America over the last year. Along with Canada, it also added tighter restrictions to Spain, Portugal and New Zealand, and said it would roll out the same restrictions to other countries over the next few months.

According to Netflix, more than 100 million households share their passwords which impact its "ability to invest in great new TV and films."
