An Okanagan local managed to snap a few photos of some white pelicans Saturday morning as they made a pit stop on Okanagan Lake.
Tracy Cook, who lives in Peachland, said her friend notified her that the pelicans were sitting in the water just off the Beach Avenue shore in the town, she said.
“It’s the first time I’ve seen them, but apparently people have seen them for the fifth year in a row (here,)” she said.
The amateur photography was happy with her photos, which she gathered around 8:30 a.m. She said the birds were bigger than expected.
"They're huge," she said.

Chris Charlesworth, with Avocet Tours, a bird touring company, said pelicans often make a stop in the Okanagan during this time of year.
“The pelicans are heading north. There are only one or two places in B.C. where they nest, in little lakes in the Central Interior part of the province, so they’re heading up to these nesting lakes. Most springs, because April is really the best month, we do see some flying through here,” he said.
Residents might see small numbers of pelicans this month. They also gather in some areas in Washington, which means that they're sometimes seen in Osoyoos, he said.
“The most famous lake that they nest is Stum Lake,” he said, adding that they usually just rest on Okanagan Lake before continuing their journey north.

“This time of year especially in the spring they tend to show up and then they’re gone,” Charlesworth said.
The birds are also sometimes seen in the fall, Charlesworth said.
