Hundreds of people from across the province have convened in Kamloops this afternoon at the former residential school site to honour survivors and those lost to residential schools.

The second annual We Stand in Solidarity convoy began this morning in Kelowna and truckers ended at the former residential school site on Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc land. Residents also came from across B.C. to show their support for the convoy, June 18.

The discovery of the remains of 215 children at the former Kamloops Residential School sparked a nationwide reckoning of Canada’s treatment of Indigenous peoples and compelled other communities to begin their own ground-penetrating radar work near former residential school sites.

Organizer Mike Otto said this morning he expected to see around 1,000 people and they left this morning with 25 trucks from Kelowna. Food trucks are on site and events will be happening throughout the day at the Kamloops site.

In a previous interview with iNFOnews, Coquitlam resident Cyril Chippeway said he decided to join the convoy for the second year to represent his company as a ‘60s scoop survivor. His father is also a residential school survivor.

“We’ve had conversations through our family because our dad was in residential school and he had to work with a living while he was there… it was a chance for me to have my voice and spread the knowledge that I get through my company,” he said.
