Penticton's traffic unit kept busy with impaired drivers last year

The Penticton RCMP detachment's traffic unit investigated 188 alcohol and related driving offences last year.

Penticton traffic officers investigated alcohol and related driving offences and collisions at the rate of roughly one every two days in 2019.

The two-officer traffic unit working within Penticton’s Community Safety and Enforcement Team charged 188 motorists with alcohol-related driving offences resulting in drivers receiving license suspensions ranging from 24 hours to 3, 7, 30 and 90 days.

The offences also involved vehicle impoundments.

Police spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy said in a press release issued Jan. 13, fully half of the 188 investigations also dealt with 90-day suspensions or criminal charges.

In addition to offences where impairment was a factor, 53 drivers were charged with prohibited, suspended or unlicensed driving infractions.

“Impaired driving is a totally preventable offence, yet many people in our province continue to be killed or injured by it every year. By outstanding efforts in enforcement and education, the Penticton and South Okanagan Similkameen Regional Detachment is committed to helping reduce this number of tragic deaths and injuries,” Const. Grandy said.
