The City of Penticton will show solidarity with the people of Ukraine by flying the country's blue and yellow flag at city hall.

Councillor James Miller suggested doing so at a council meeting last night, March 15.

“Has any thought been given to, maybe for a couple days, flying the Ukrainian flag at city hall as other municipalities have in British Columbia?” Miller said.

Mayor John Vassilaki said he would have no problem with it but “it’s up to our legislative folks on the other end of the table.”

CAO Donny van Dyk said the mayor has broad control over which flags are raised.

So Vassilaki concluded, “if we can find a flag of Ukraine we can fly it.”

Miller later said in a post to Facebook that his suggestion received unanimous support from council and the Ukrainian flag will fly for a short period of time at city hall.
