PENTICTON - Flood containment crews aren’t the only ones who are busy these days as Penticton Search and Rescue volunteers play a support role during this spring’s high water events.

Rescue spokesperson Randy Brown says in a media release the group has been active over the past four days lending support to police and emergency officials as flood pressures increase. Search and rescue crews assisted regional district personnel as evacuation orders have been issued in Faulder and Keremeos.

Brown says rescue personnel also assisted RCMP in a search for four hikers who became lost while hiking in Okanagan Mountain Park on Monday afternoon, May 7. A dozen searchers and a helicopter were mobilized and the four were located and airlifted to safety.

Late Tuesday evening rescue personnel were called to help locate a missing motorcyclist in the Carmi area east of Penticton. The biker was found around noon yesterday, May 9, in Okanagan Falls. Twelve searchers and several all terrain vehicles assisted in the search.

Brown advises those who break down in remote areas to stay with their vehicle, as attempting to walk out late in the day usually results in an expanded search area, and subsequently more resources and time on the part of search teams. He also cautions outdoor enthusiasts to stay clear of fast moving waters at this time of year.
