More than 100 new childcare spaces are coming to Penticton thanks to $2.9 million in grant funding from the province.

The capital grant, announced today, Sept. 18, is coming from the Child Care B.C. New Space Fund.

OneSky Community Resources will lead the design, construction and operation of the Edmonton Avenue daycare facility as it partners with the City to create up to 116 new childcare spaces.

"On behalf of Penticton city council, and parents of children who will benefit from the added childcare spaces, I’d like to thank the province for this grant and the economic value it will bring through the construction of a new facility,” Penticton Mayor John Vassilaki said in a City of Penticton media release.

The City will now initiate a process for a zoning amendment to add daycare as a permitted use in Kiwanis Park on Edmonton Avenue.

Kiwanis Park has been home to two childcare facilities for the past 30 years but childcare is not currently a permitted use.

The City also intends to review the new childcare facility with the community.
