Penticton, RDOS to hold live-streamed conference on Mount Christie wildfire

The Mount Christie wildfire is resulting in an evacuation of Heritage Hills south of Penticton this afternoon, Aug. 18, 2020.

The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen and the City of Penticton are holding a live-streamed conference today to update the public on the Mount Christie wildfire.

The event will be held at 12:30 p.m. and will be streamed on the city's Facebook page. The video recording will also be posted on the RDOS and city YouTube channels.

Chair of the RDOS Karla Kozakevich and Mayor John Vassilaki, will each make a statement.

B.C. Wildfire fire information officer Taylor McDonald says 21 firefighters worked the Mount Christie wildfire last night, along with local community fire fighters, setting up control lines, guards and structure protection. The fire was exhibiting rank 3 behaviour as a vigorous surface fire.

Taylor says winds are an issue for firefighters this morning. She also cautions boaters to be aware of amphibious aircraft and helicopters using Skaha Lake, and to maintain a safe distance.

Nearly 4,000 Penticton properties are on evacuation alert. The fire is still listed at 1,000 hectares in size, same as last night.
