Penticton police want to have a chat

PENTICTON - Heads up all you social media keyboard complainers, now you have a chance to have your say where it matters.

Crime concerns in Penticton and South Okanagan have been prevalent on Facebook forums, but now the RCMP wants to hear it directly. The Penticton and South Okanagan Similkameen regional detachment is offering two opportunities. The first is a community policing forum April 11 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre at 273 Power Street.

Supt. Ted De Jager, office in charge of the detachment, has made some controversial announcements recently that have sparked plenty of criticism online, particularly a limited response to "completely preventable" thefts from vehicles.

"I would like to invite all residents of the regional district to a community policing forum to let us know what they want to see," De Jager said in a release. "What do we need to do collectively to promote safety and wellness in our communities?"

It's open to residents Oliver, Osoyoos, Princeton, Keremeos, Summerland and Penticton.

He will do a short presentation on the current issues and trends, then a panel discussion before answering questions that were submitted before April 10. Those questions can be submitted to PolicingForum@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. If time permits, the forum may allow open mic questions.

The forum is open to all residents of the region from Summerland to Princeton.

If you can't make it there and still want your voice to be heard by someone who can do something about it, police are also inviting area residents and business owners to have a Coffee with a Cop in Penticton, an opportunity to meet police officers from the area for casual conversation. That's at The Nest and Nectar at 301-1475 Fairview Rd., Penticton on March 22 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The event is free and open to all area residents and business owners.
