Penticton’s MLA Dan Ashton will not seek re-election.
The Penticton-Peachland BC United MLA has announced that he will not be in the running in next year's BC election. He will finish out his term and step down from his role, according to a letter sent to party members in the riding.
“Please accept my deepest gratitude and personal thanks to you the citizens, members, volunteers, donors, supporters, the wonderful staff at BC United headquarters and in the Legislature, for your ongoing support and commitment to making British Columbia better. We accomplished a lot over the years and for that, I am and always will be grateful,” Ashton said in the letter.
Ashton was first elected in 2013 and will have held three terms once he steps down. Currently, he serves as the Shadow Minister for Municipal Affairs while he previously served as an Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation critic. He has also served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and to the Minister Responsible for Core Review. He further served as the Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services and was a member of the Treasury Board, the vice-chair of the Cabinet Working Group on Core Review and the President of PNWER.
Ashton says he will continue to support the BC United leadership even after the end of his term.
“I remain totally committed to BC United under the leadership of Kevin Falcon. Kevin is the only leader able to defeat the current NDP Government and deliver positive and real results for all British Columbians, not just broken promise,” he said in the letter.
Dan Ashton did not mention a reason for not seeking re-election.
