The Penticton Minor Hockey Association will be able to suit up 25 hockey players who might otherwise not be able to afford to play the game.

The association was the recent recipient of part of a national $2 million hockey equipment donations program known as the Hockey Equipment Relief Program, launched by Bauer Hockey, The National Hockey League, The National Hockey League Players Association and Hockey Canada.

“The gear comes in all different sizes, so we can provide gear for anyone who needs help getting on the ice. For instance, we have a female tryout program coming up this weekend, and a hardship fund for players who can’t afford to outfit themselves,” Penticton Minor Hockey Association Communications Officer Darla Roy says.

It’s the first time in several years the Penticton association has been granted a donation.

Bauer’s web page says those eligible include families who have been financially impacted by COVID-19.

The Penticton Minor Hockey Association has a membership of just under 500 members, in addition to providing a hub for female hockey players in the South Okanagan.

“The donation will provide a great boost for the hardship fund,” Roy says.
