Penticton looking at ways to get shopping cart off city streets

FILE PHOTO

Everyone has seen shopping carts cluttering the streets, and Penticton city council wants stores to do something about it.

Penticton city council will discuss options for preventing people from stealing shopping carts at a meeting tomorrow, Sept. 12.

There are three main options proposed by the city to deal with shopping cart theft.

The first option is to force stores to register with the city so they can be contacted about stolen carts. Another option is forcing stores to have wheel locking mechanisms, GPS trackers and shopping cart security guards.

The final option is to force stores to retrieve the stolen carts.

City council also wants to address the root of the problem by asking stores to partner with organizations that help unhoused people manage their possessions without using shopping carts.
