CHARLOTTETOWN - Police on Prince Edward Island say three people are dead after a fire at a vacant building in Charlottetown.

The Charlottetown Police Service says officers were called to the building on Mt Edward Road around 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Investigators say one person was airlifted to a Halifax hospital, but police were told that others could still be inside the flaming building.

Police say officers tried to enter the building but were forced back by intense smoke and heavy fire.

They say three bodies were later found inside.

Police say investigators are working to determine the identity of the victims and the cause of the fire.
