The battle lines are being drawn in Peachland where the last race for mayor came down to drawing names from a hat.

Cindy Fortin and Harry Gough finished tied with 804 votes each in 2018. Fortin was re-elected to her second term as mayor when her name was drawn from a hat.

Fortin announced on Facebook yesterday, Aug. 7, that she is running for re-election.

“I know it’s been a tough couple-plus years for the citizens of this community – with restrictions, isolation, health and financial worry,” Fortin posted. “It’s part of the reason I didn’t announce earlier. I wanted people to get outside, enjoy the summer sunshine, the lake, hiking, camping, relaxing outside at your home with family you may not have seen for a while, or just swing in your hammock chilling (like my neighbour does). There was plenty of time to get into all the election crazies.”

Fortin posted that she wants to keep taxes low, encourage moderate development and update the Water Master Plan.

She also wants to see a new fire hall or “protective services building” constructed, to review building heights along Beach Avenue and get more homes hooked up to the sewer system.

Fortin's website is here.

First term Peachland councillor Patrick Van Minsel announced in June that he’s also running for mayor.
