Survey shows world peace improved in 2011; Canada at 4th place

LONDON, England United Kingdom - Canada has jumped three notches to fourth place on the Global Peace Index, with only Iceland, Denmark and New Zealand judged to be more peaceful.

The index, published today by the Institute for Economics and Peace, attributed Canada's rise to fewer casualties among its troops stationed in Afghanistan.

Overall, the index shows the world was a more peaceful place last year despite unrest in different parts of the globe, reversing a two-year decline.

The survey also noted that sub-Saharan Africa no longer occupies the bottom spot for the first time since the index was launched in 2007.

The Middle East and the North Africa region have taken over that position.

Somalia remains the world's least peaceful country for a second year running.

The index is based on the study of 23 indicators in 158 countries.
