Patient assaults patient at Kelowna General then punches RCMP officer

A Kelowna man is being held in custody until a scheduled court appearance after a series of assaults on the Canada Day long weekend.

Police were called to a Code White (aggression) incident at Kelowna General Hospital on Sunday, July 2, after a patient attacked another patient.

“A Kelowna General Hospital security guard responded and was able to stop the assault, however sustained minor injury to his face from a small metal object used by the same suspect,” reads a Kelowna RCMP news release issued today, July 6.

Police arrested the attacker and took him to the RCMP station.

“During the male’s booking in process and once his handcuffs were removed, he punched one of the arresting officers in the face,” the release reads. “The male suspect was arrested a second time now for assaulting a peace officer and was secured in cells pending a court appearance.”

Justin Ryan Patrick Robinson, born in 1980, has been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and one count of assaulting a police officer.

He's scheduled to appear in court on July 10.

“Interior Health stated that they would not speak to additional details about the incident, but they take any incidents of aggression seriously and recognize they impact all patients and staff who are involved, or witness them,” the release reads. “Interior Health is providing follow up supports to the individuals who need it.”
