PENTICTON - Parks Canada appears to have heard appeals from South Okanagan residents to extend the public consultation process on the national park reserve proposal.

The agency issued a statement late yesterday advising it was extending the public consultation period by two weeks.

The extended period of time will give stakeholder groups who had meetings rescheduled an opportunity to submit their views on the proposed boundary and provide input on issues regarding land management.

Parks Canada says the extension will also provide members of the community and other interested parties with more time to participate.

Several stakeholder groups who had their meetings suddenly cancelled earlier this month demanded an extension of the public consultation process which was originally intended to wrap up at the end of February.

Meetings with stakeholders are expected to conclude on Feb. 28. Those who have not had an opportunity to attend a presentation by Parks Canada can view a presentation by Parks Canada at this Parks Canada website.

Residents’ views on the national park reserve can be made through the consultation website until March 15 at the Parks Canada "Let’s talk" website.
