RICHMOND, B.C. - Calling all pet detectives, a parakeet has been bird-napped from a pet store in Richmond, B.C.

RCMP say a man stuffed Sky, a one-year-old ring-neck parakeet, into a black shopping bag and dashed out of Ackroyd Pets and Aquariums.

Police say the suspect is a Caucasian man about 35 years old, is five-feet and 10-inches tall, with a heavy build, dark hair and glasses.

Sky, is valued at about $700, is silver-blue with a red beak, about 20 inches long, and has a metal ring band on one of his legs.

Cpl. Stephanie Ashton says Sky is a sweet and friendly bird who won't survive if he is released or escapes.

She says he bears some resemblance to characters in a popular movie, which may have made him attractive to the thief.

"You know, funnily enough, he does look like the birds on Rio," she says. "I don't know if that's something that this person was thinking at the time."

Staff at the pet shop say Sky didn't talk, so there's little chance for the thief that the bird will become a stool pigeon.

Ashton says Sky made several valiant attempts to escape before being stuffed in the bag.
