A Kamloops-born director is using the River City to feature local businesses and residents in his upcoming pandemic thriller.

Ken Hegan used the pandemic as an opportunity to head home to Kamloops where he wrote the screenplay Outrunners. The film is a comedy thriller that focuses on a young woman who is trying to save her mother’s life while dodging bullets from snipers and avoiding drones that are filming for a reality TV show.

The movie will be filmed in various areas of Kamloops and will welcome product placements to boost local businesses.

“I’m excited to film in Kamloops as it has such a unique look and feel, and Kamloopsians are incredibly friendly and supportive,” Hegan says in the media release.

Hegan will begin directing the film this September. He has teamed up with another Kamloops filmmaker Vesta Giles and Vancouver producer Shawn Major to film parts of the movie in the Plaza Hotel, Brocklehurst, North Kamloops, Ord Road and along the downtown streets and alleyways.

“We’re thrilled that we get to promote Kamloops businesses like The Plaza Hotel by featuring them in this special movie. We’re looking for colourful locals to perform as extras,” Giles says in the release. “Watch for our casting notice.”

The filmmakers are also looking for a few other sets to film in. The crew is hoping to film in a large house with a backyard and hot tub, where the filming would take about two days. They’re also looking for a fictional hospital room with a bed, IV stand and EKG monitor, which they would film in for one day. Lastly, the cast and crew will need a place to stay for the duration of the filming and are hoping to find a house or RVs for accommodation from Sept. 8 to 19.

Hegan has been a writer for Rolling Stone, GQ, George Stoumboulopoulos’ CBC talk show and 20 other TV shows. Outrunners will be his sixth feature screenplay, but his first time as a director.

If you’re interested in offering accommodation, have an area that could be used as a set, or would like to feature your product, send an email to Hegan or Giles.
