The Latest: Hiker in fatal Columbia River Gorge fall from NY

BRIDAL VEIL, Ore. - The Latest on a hiker who fell to his death at Bridal Veil Falls in Oregon (all times local):

5:15 p.m.

Authorities have identified a 64-year-old man who fell from a trail while hiking in the Columbia River Gorge as John Ferdinand Winther, of Mastic Beach, New York.

Media outlets report that Winther was hiking with his two adult children on his birthday Tuesday when he fell along the Bridal Veil Trail.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office says people nearby had started CPR before medics arrived but that the man died at the scene.

The sheriff's office says the man fell about 50 feet but firefighters from Corbett say they distance was closer to 20 to 30 feet.

Authorities say a 64-year-old man fell from a trail while hiking and died in the Columbia River Gorge.

Media outlets report that authorities were called Tuesday afternoon to help a man who had been hiking with family members when he fell along the Bridal Veil Trail.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office says people nearby had started CPR before medics arrived but that the man died at the scene.

The sheriff's office says the man fell about 50 feet.

His name wasn't released.
