Opportunities to get physical with long weekend activities

PENTICTON - The B.C. Day long weekend offers an opportunity to get some exercise, with an across the lake swim and an ultra triathlon among the options of things to do.

B.C. Day Party in the Park takes place Monday, Aug. 7 in Gyro Park, running from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

It’s a free day of family entertainment with a full slate of entertainment, market vendors, and other free family activities.

The Rock the Sun concert series continues with Floyd Meets Brown, a psychedelic funk rock band with big sound.

The Gyro Park concert happens Friday, Aug. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Ultra 520 long distance triathlon takes place Saturday, Aug. 5 through Monday, Aug. 7 in a three day event that has competitors completing a 10 kilometre swim, 425.6 kilometre bike and an 84.4 kilometre run.

Spectators are welcome, event is by invitation only.

The Rattlesnake Island swim gets underway Saturday, Aug. 5 at 6:30 a.m.

Events consist of a one-way, 3.1 kilometre swim across Okanagan Lake from Rattlesnake Island to Peachland, and a seven kilometre out-and-back swim, looping around Rattlesnake Island.

The island swim has recently been taken over by the Across the Lake Swim Society, who hope to increase participation with enhanced safety features, more swim support, more prizes and an improved swag bag.

The 22nd annual Rotary Wheels Car Show is an all-day event featuring a great car show, live entertainment, a beverage garden, food and car-merchandise vendors.

Active community and farmer’s markets this weekend include the Penticton Farmer’s Market, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, the Penticton Community Market, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5,   the Okanagan Falls Community and Farmer’s Market, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, and the Summerland Rotary Sunday Market on Sunday, Aug. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Summer Geology Bus Tours are back on Saturday, Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Cost is $20, with a few short but easy hikes. Tickets are limited, available at the Summerland Museum at 9521 Wharton St.
